"Burning Bright" - Collectors Club, December 2020

“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8: 12

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1: 1-5

“The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” John 1: 9-12

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.” Isaiah 9:2

During the final presidential debate of the 2020 election, Joe Biden warned Americans “we’re about to go into a dark winter” as he proclaimed what he foresaw will happen with the “pandemic.” Those were his words. The Bible tells us that words mean more than we know in the spiritual realm. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” Proverbs 18:21

I don’t hear words of life coming from that statement. What a depressing thing to say to a nation and to the world that has already gone through so much. Where’s the hope? This isn’t about politics, it’s about recognizing who carries hope and speaks life, whatever the circumstances are.

That statement really bothered my spirit. Every part of me said, no, I won’t accept that. We speak life and light! All I wanted to do was paint the opposite and this painting, “Burning Bright” was created for my December painting. The darkness will not overcome the LIGHT that was born into the world, and all those who believe in Jesus carries that light. We must burn brighter in this hour! Do not let the darkness overcome you, we have our hope and shine brightly as believers in Christ.

The five candles represent the Advent candles. The celebration of the Advent season is the anticipation of Christ’s birth leading up to Christmas. The Advent tradition is to light a candle on the four Sundays leading up to Christmas and the center candle is lite on Christmas Day, celebrating the birth of Jesus. The four candles represent hope, faith, joy and peace and are lite along with reading of Scripture with those themes, focusing our attention and meditation on the true meaning of Christmas, the light of Christ our Saviour who was born.

Today we celebrate The Light! I pray this painting is a small encouragement to burning brightly during this Christmas season and into 2021. We are the light of the world, we do not have to accept a “dark winter” because we have hope in Jesus. Be a light to others around you who are down, hurting, feeling lost and depressed with what is happening in the world. We have to be the hope for others and share about Jesus. What we see in the natural, does not have to dictate how we respond. There is always hope and always light even in the darkest situations.
