The Story Behind the Work

About the Artwork

Shop The Word Became Flesh as a fine art canvas print or ready-to-hang stretched canvas. Each piece is printed to order by Mindi Oaten Art.

The Word Became Flesh is Scripture-inspired Christian artwork based on John 1, portraying Jesus Christ as the eternal Word who became flesh.

About the Painting

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind." John 1: 1-4 "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters." Genesis 1: 1-2

In the vast tapestry of a deep cerulean expanse, a divine scene unravels, capturing the essence of creation's first breath. The painting evokes the moments of Genesis 1, where the Spirit of God, full of promise and life, hovered over the watery abyss. This sacred moment is beautifully embodied by a kaleidoscope of monarch butterflies, gracefully dancing above the waters. These ethereal creatures, delicate yet vibrant, mirror the Spirit's presence.

Central to this celestial dance, a pair of hands lovingly holds an open book. These hands are emblematic of Jesus, the Word made flesh, as celebrated in John 1:1. The pages, touched by the soft wings of butterflies, seem to pulsate with divine energy, reflecting Jesus' transformative role in God's grand design.

The butterflies, likened to the Spirit's brooding presence, lead one to contemplate the redemptive and renewing power of Jesus, the divine plan incarnate. Just as a butterfly signifies rebirth and transformation, so does Jesus, the Word made flesh, embody God's promise to bring light from darkness, hope from despair, and life from void. Through this artwork, we are reminded of the eternal dance between Word and Spirit and the transformative love of Jesus, the very essence of wisdom and truth taking on flesh and blood.

Artwork Care & Materials

Fine art canvas prints

Mindi’s fine art canvas prints are reproductions of her original paintings printed on artist-quality canvas. Sizes vary by artwork, from smaller pieces to larger statement sizes. Unless the product option specifically says Stretched Canvas Print, canvas prints are shipped unstretched.

Unstretched canvas prints can be framed, mounted, or professionally stretched by your local framer. Because each artwork has its own proportions, available sizes vary; order from the size and format shown on the individual product page.

Need help choosing a size or format? Contact Mindi Oaten Art or visit the Frequently Asked Questions.

Stretched canvas prints

A Stretched Canvas Print is a fine art canvas print stretched over an internal support frame, creating a ready-to-display presentation without first visiting a framer. It can be hung as-is or placed inside a decorative outer frame.

Stretched canvas sizes vary by artwork. If the size you need is not listed, contact the studio to ask whether a custom stretched size is available.

Custom sizes & custom art print orders

Mindi Oaten Art may be able to create an approved custom fine art canvas print in a size not listed on the product page. Custom print orders are quoted individually based on the artwork, final dimensions, proportions, and finishing requirements.

Displaying, handling & long-term care

Displaying: keep artwork indoors and away from prolonged direct sunlight, excessive moisture, smoke, and rapid temperature changes.

Handling: use clean, dry hands and hold prints or originals by the edges whenever possible. Support larger pieces evenly with two hands.

Cleaning: use only a soft, dry cloth or clean artist’s brush. Do not apply water, glass cleaner, oils, sprays, or household cleaners directly to printed or painted surfaces.

Framing: archival, acid-free materials and UV-protective glazing are recommended for works on paper and can also help protect fine art prints. Canvas works should be framed or stretched appropriately for the specific piece.
