"The Sparrows" - Collectors Club, February 2021
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” Matthew 6:25
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.” Matthew 10: 29-31
“May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 15: 5-6
One of my favourite promises from God, he takes away our worries. When I was a child, my dad would repeat 1 Peter 5:7 to me when I would worry. I have a tendency to worry about things, apparently quite a bit, because this verse I have never forgotten. Even to this day, when thoughts of worry start to consume me, I hear it go through my mind, “cast all your worries on him because he cares for you.”
While praying for February’s painting, I heard the simple words, “do not worry” and also “unity.” I was sitting in my car waiting on my son and watched some birds fly by, three of them. They landed in the tree, flew around chasing one another and landed on the roof of the school. I immediately thought of the sparrows and how God cares for them. And thought about the three of them flying together in unity. This painting is a reminder of God’s great love for us, he cares for the birds, how much more will he take care of us. But it also is a picture of simple unity and the strength of “flying” together.
When reading about the Biblical symbolism for sparrows, to my surprise and confirmation, they represent freedom, joy and protection, but can also be a symbol of simplicity and community. Teamwork and hard work are what make the sparrows productive.
Jesus linked not being fearful in the face of adversity to being confident that Jehovah, our provider, will care for you personally. If he cares for the lowly birds, how much more will he care for you. God’s heart, kindness and compassion is so deep and wide that it extends even to the smallest creatures. We need not worry or be afraid in the times we live in. May we find comfort in Him and encourage one another in the faith. Let’s fly together!
How lovely is your dwelling place,
My soul yearns, even faints,
for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh cry out
for the living God.
Even the sparrow has found a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may have her young—
a place near your altar,
Lord Almighty, my King and my God.
Blessed are those who dwell in your house;
they are ever praising you. Psalm 84: 1-4
I pray these little sparrows are a reminder of two things: do not worry about tomorrow, keep your eyes fixed on our provider, working together in unity and love. Praise the Lord for his faithfulness!
