"The Potter's Hand" - fine art print

“But now, O Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You are our potter; we are all the work of Your hand”– Isaiah 64:8

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.”– 2 Corinthians 4:7-10

~

This painting carries the image of Jesus as the Potter, shaping and reshaping lives upon His wheel. Throughout Scripture, God uses the metaphor of clay and vessels to reveal His tender authority as Creator and Redeemer. We are the clay—soft and pliable in His hands—yet it is His breath, His touch, His vision that transforms what is formless into something beautiful and purposeful.

As Isaiah declared, “But now, O Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You are our potter; we are all the work of Your hand” (Isaiah 64:8). The Potter applies both pressure and gentleness, stretching and centering, forming vessels that can carry His Spirit and glory. Our part is surrender—to yield to His design, stay soft in His hands, and trust the process when the wheel spins and the shaping feels uncomfortable.

The beauty of the Gospel is that even cracked and broken vessels are not discarded. Jesus redeems what was shattered. Like the jars of clay Paul writes of in 2 Corinthians 4:7, our weakness becomes the very place His glory shines through. In His hands, the broken are restored and remade into testimonies of grace.

I believe this is a word for now: God is forming His people afresh. The pressure you feel may be His hand pressing you into shape. The stretching may be His Spirit preparing you to hold more of Him. Though you may feel like a lump of clay, know this—He is making you into a vessel, sanctified and useful for the Master’s work (2 Timothy 2:21).

The Potter’s hand is steady. His vision for you is beautiful. And in His hands, nothing is wasted.
