"Gathering in Jerusalem" - painted live at the "Jerusalem Prayer Breakfast" with Time to Revive, 2017

As I painted this piece live at the Jerusalem Prayer Breakfast in 2017, the air was filled with a sense of reverence and unity. Surrounded by the ancient beauty of the Holy City, I felt deeply honored to contribute to such a special gathering. This still life is a visual prayer, each brushstroke a silent word spoken for the peace of Jerusalem.
I chose the traditional form of still life to represent this timeless message. The multitude of flowers, each one distinct, represents the nations of the world coming together in a single vessel, lifting up their unique fragrance in prayer and praise. This vessel is not just a container but a symbol of unity and common purpose, with a key wrapped around it to signify that gathering together is the key to peace and power of prayer.
The white feathers that gently fall evoke the presence of the Holy Spirit and a symbol of peace as embodied by the dove. Amongst the flowers, olive branches weave their way, symbolizing the grafting of many into one family through Christ. The apple, placed prominently in the composition, represents Jerusalem itself – cherished and held dear as the apple of God's eye.
And beneath it all lies the Jewish prayer cloth, a talit, not merely a detail in the composition but a symbol of faith and a bridge between traditions. It anchors the work, reminding us of the shared roots of faith and the common ground of prayer. May this visual prayer serve as a reflection of the Psalm, "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: 'May those who love you be secure. May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels.'" (Psalm 122:6-7). For in its peace, we shall find our own.
