The Story Behind the Work

About the Artwork

Shop Born Again as a fine art canvas print or ready-to-hang stretched canvas. Each piece is printed to order by Mindi Oaten Art.

In Born Again, Mindi Oaten draws from John 3 and Jesus' nighttime conversation with Nicodemus about spiritual rebirth and new life.

About the Painting

"Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again." (John 3:3)

In the evening hours of a Jerusalem night, Jesus, the embodiment of wisdom and revelation, held a conversation with Nicodemus, a Pharisee and ruler among the Jews. Nicodemus, in his quest for understanding, approached Jesus with genuine curiosity, asking Him about the concept of rebirth. Jesus, in His divine wisdom, responded, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again." (John 3:3)

As Nicodemus grappled with the literal understanding of being born again, Jesus further expounded, "Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit." (John 3:5-6). This profound revelation points towards the transformative power of spiritual rebirth, signifying a departure from living only in the earthly realm to embrace the leading of the Spirit.

The painting captures the essence of this spiritual awakening. The hand, tenderly holding the living water, evokes the imagery of baptism and the washing of new life. The water becomes a visual sign of cleansing, surrender, and the new birth Jesus describes—a life made new by the Spirit. Just as water purifies and rejuvenates the body, the painting’s baptismal imagery points to cleansing and new life in Christ.

The butterfly, a symbol of transformation, represents the profound change that occurs when one is born again. Its delicate wings, bearing the weight of its journey, convey the beauty of metamorphosis, mirroring the transformation of a believer's soul when they accept the message of Christ. Floating delicately atop the water is a white feather, a symbol reminiscent of the Holy Spirit, often depicted as a dove. It serves as a poignant reminder of the Spirit's role in our spiritual rebirth.

Artwork Care & Materials

Fine art canvas prints

Mindi’s fine art canvas prints are reproductions of her original paintings printed on artist-quality canvas. Sizes vary by artwork, from smaller pieces to larger statement sizes. Unless the product option specifically says Stretched Canvas Print, canvas prints are shipped unstretched.

Unstretched canvas prints can be framed, mounted, or professionally stretched by your local framer. Because each artwork has its own proportions, available sizes vary; order from the size and format shown on the individual product page.

Need help choosing a size or format? Contact Mindi Oaten Art or visit the Frequently Asked Questions.

Stretched canvas prints

A Stretched Canvas Print is a fine art canvas print stretched over an internal support frame, creating a ready-to-display presentation without first visiting a framer. It can be hung as-is or placed inside a decorative outer frame.

Stretched canvas sizes vary by artwork. If the size you need is not listed, contact the studio to ask whether a custom stretched size is available.

Custom sizes & custom art print orders

Mindi Oaten Art may be able to create an approved custom fine art canvas print in a size not listed on the product page. Custom print orders are quoted individually based on the artwork, final dimensions, proportions, and finishing requirements.

Custom sizes must respect the proportions of the original painting, and some dimensions may require cropping. The studio will confirm what works visually before the order is finalized.

Displaying, handling & long-term care

Displaying: keep artwork indoors and away from prolonged direct sunlight, excessive moisture, smoke, and rapid temperature changes.

Handling: use clean, dry hands and hold prints or originals by the edges whenever possible. Support larger pieces evenly with two hands.

Cleaning: use only a soft, dry cloth or clean artist’s brush. Do not apply water, glass cleaner, oils, sprays, or household cleaners directly to printed or painted surfaces.

Framing: archival, acid-free materials and UV-protective glazing are recommended for works on paper and can also help protect fine art prints. Canvas works should be framed or stretched appropriately for the specific piece.
