"The Sparrows" - 24 x 30 inches acrylic on canvas
Painted for my Collectors Club, February 2021
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” Matthew 6:25
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.” Matthew 10: 29-31
“May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 15: 5-6
While praying for February’s painting, I heard the simple words, “do not worry” and also “unity.” I was sitting in my car waiting on my son and watched some birds fly by, three of them. They landed in the tree, flew around chasing one another and landed on the roof of the school. I immediately thought of the sparrows and how God cares for them. And thought about the three of them flying together in unity. This painting is a reminder of God’s great love for us, he cares for the birds, how much more will he take care of us. But it also is a picture of simple unity and the strength of “flying” together.
When reading about the Biblical symbolism for sparrows, to my surprise and confirmation, they represent freedom, joy and protection, but can also be a symbol of simplicity and community. Teamwork and hard work are what make the sparrows productive.
Original artwork, acrylic on stretched canvas. Wrapped edges are painted white. Adding a beautiful custom frame will give your new painting added elegance, but is not necessary if you prefer the raw edge look.
