Part of my Beauty for Ashes collection, Grace Unfolding is an original mixed media artwork inspired by the promise of Isaiah 61:3—that God exchanges ashes for beauty and gently reveals His grace through every season of our lives.
Grace is rarely rushed. Like the slow unfolding of a magnolia blossom, God’s work in us often happens quietly, layer by layer. Even when we cannot yet see the finished picture, He is faithfully shaping our hearts, revealing His beauty through patience, healing, and surrender.
Created with watercolor, charcoal, and genuine gold leaf, each material carries intentional symbolism. The charcoal represents ashes, refining, and seasons that have left their mark. The watercolor reflects surrender, tenderness, and the gentle work of the Holy Spirit. The gold leaf speaks of redemption, reminding us that God’s grace restores beauty, dignity, and purpose to every life placed in His hands.
The unfinished circle of gold surrounding the magnolia symbolizes God’s eternal presence and His continual work of restoration. His grace is never exhausted, nor is His work complete in a single moment. Day by day, He faithfully unfolds His purposes, revealing more of His likeness within us.
Grace Unfolding is the fifth painting in the Beauty for Ashes series, where each flower reflects a unique expression of God’s redeeming love. Though every journey is different, they all lead to the same truth: nothing surrendered to Christ is ever wasted. His grace is sufficient for every season, and His beauty is revealed in His perfect time.
