"The Transfiguration"

“And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.  And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him."  Matthew 17:1-3

~

In this depiction of the Transfiguration, Jesus stands transfigured in divine radiance atop a mountain, conversing with the figures of Moses and Elijah. The painting captures this pivotal moment where heaven gently descends upon the earth, the robes of Jesus glowing with an otherworldly light.

To his side, Moses, the giver of the Law, is presented in contemplative reverence, symbolizing the Torah and the journey of Israel. Elijah, representing the Prophets, stands opposite, echoing the hope and the promise of redemption. They flank Jesus like pillars of the ancient covenant, their presence signifying the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets in the person of Christ. The disciples, witnesses to this sacred convergence, are caught in a tableau of astonishment and worship.

Amidst the celestial conversation, a butterfly dances in the air, symbolizing the completion of a cycle and the emergence of a new form of life. This transformation parallels the divine mission of Jesus, culminating in His resurrection, much as the butterfly emerges, reborn in splendor.

The clouds that envelop them, a visual chorus celebrating this union of heaven's promises with earth's anticipation. The voice of the Father speaks, who confirms Jesus as His beloved Son, the chosen One who fulfills the long-held hopes etched in ancient scripture. This artistic rendition invites us to ponder the depth of the covenant fulfilled and the transformation promised to all creation—a metamorphosis from the law’s chrysalis to the freedom of the spirit, a single, silent promise uttered in the language of light and color.
