This painting powerfully symbolizes the ascension and glorification of Jesus Christ, drawing from biblical scriptures and Christian theology to create a rich tapestry of symbolism. The image depicts Jesus, ascended to heaven, seated at the right hand of the Father, embodying the fulfillment of Psalm 110:1, “The LORD said to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.’”
In the depiction, Jesus firmly grasps an iron sceptre, an emblem of divine authority and governance, as stated in Psalm 2:9, “You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.” The artist takes a symbolic liberty by adorning the sceptre with a rose at the top, representing the Rose of Sharon, a title ascribed to Jesus in Song of Solomon 2:1, “I am the rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys.” This floral symbol harmonizes with the themes of creation and life found in the Genesis narrative.
