"Jesus Wept" John 11:35

The shortest verse in the Bible, “Jesus wept.”  We see in Scripture Jesus was a man with human emotion who cried tears as we all experience, a reminder that he knows our burdens and cares, and grieves deeply over us.

“As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.” Luke 19:41-44

“In the days of his flesh,  Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. Although he was a son,  he learned obedience through what he suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him”  Hebrews 5:7-9

~

I painted this in August 2023 for the new series I am working on of the life of Jesus... I couldn't shake the sheer emotion and love I felt Jesus has for the world, for his chosen people, for the church and for those who do not receive him and know him.

He wept for the death of a friend and the pain of those who were grieving.  He wept over Jerusalem with the deep longing for his people to recognize the one they have been longing for, the Messiah, was right in front of them - they missed it.  He longed for them to see and was in anguish they rejected him, knowing their judgement was to come.  Jesus longs for us to see him, to recognize him first and foremost in our lives because he knows we will go through suffering - as he did.  We will miss it and fall into sin.  Miss the moments of his leading right in front of us… but there is good news, he is the God who cares for us more than we do, a God of redemption, restoration, recovery, repentance and second chances.  He was obedient in suffering to the point of death, so we may have a life of renewal and eternal salvation.

No matter what we are going through, what circumstances seem to be surrounding us, through the Holy Spirit he is here with us.  Romans 8:34 says that Jesus “is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.”  Jesus prayers for us constantly.  Think about that!  When we look to him and lift up our circumstance, we can be comforted knowing he is praying for us and sent the Spirit to comfort and guide us.

As I painted this, I felt his tears deeply.  I was also reminded of the prophet Jeremiah, known as the “weeping prophet” from the Old Testament.  Jeremiah was called by God to live out the messages and warn the people.   Jeremiah grieved over the wickedness and the impending judgment the nation’s sins had provoked. Jeremiah’s warnings went mostly unheeded, and he responded to Judah’s rebellion with tears of mourning.  In his sorrow, Jeremiah the weeping prophet revealed the heart of God, much like Jesus wept over Jerusalem in the verse above.  With the times we live in, evil at an all-time high and in our face… I see more and more of those called like Jeremiah, to weep over our nations, cities, and peoples.  We must continue to pray and sometimes tears are all we have, Jesus knows, he weeps with us.
